Number 3 – ALBERT NOBBS

Okay, I’m in the minority on this one. But regardless whether you buy Glenn Close in the role like I did, it is hard to deny pull of the tender story told in “Albert Nobbs.”

Close, who gives her best performance in years, plays the title character, a waiter at a hotel in 19th century Ireland. Albert has a secret that we, the audience, already know–he is really a woman. But Albert’s real secret is why she has lived her life as a man. This little but touching film is filled with fine performances led by Close, who should be recognized by the Academy, together with Janet McTeer, whose looming presence acts as a perfect balance for Close’s understated turn.
