Number 9 – SHAME

Folks interested in making movies would do well to watch “Shame” carefully. And while I’m not interested in watching it a second time just yet, I will eventually if for no other reason than to study the technical aspects more closely. The movie stars Michael Fassbender, who this year was uber cool at Magneto, gave a very studied performance as Carl Jung, and even went literary playing the tortured Rochester in a solid adaptation of Charlotte Brontë. But his performance in “Shame” is one that will get him nominated for everything.

As a man with sex addiction in “Shame,” Fassbender literally bears all (the film was originally NC-17). But around him is Carey Mulligan, playing his sister, who has one scene where she reinvents the song “New York, New York.” Jeff Marker, my Film Fix co-host, pointed to that particular scene as amazing. Marker further said of the film on our show that director Steve McQueen’s patience with his actors was rare and it was a treat that he allowed the camera to capture them emoting and being just great. And those points are absolutely true, “Shame” is impactful on almost every level exploring the depths of sexual depravity in a way rarely caught on film.
