Between 5 and 10 films… The Oscar nominations for best picture announced in late January will likely be closer to 5 nominated films than the bloated 10. The new rules of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts makes it possible for the best picture category to be composed of five to ten nominees. And that’s a good thing, because Hollywood failed to deliver one really significant mainstream film in 2011. Even the total domestic box office was down with attendance hitting a reported 16-year low. Audiences and critics were less than thrilled in 2011. But there were bright spots.
