Hollywood can\u2019t shake Japanese horror remake curse<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Once again, showing that Hollywood has no idea what to do with J-Horror, \u201cThe Grudge\u201d is another in a continuing line of incomprehensible cash grabs. What was once creepy is now laughable and frustrating.

This loose remake of Japanese horror director Takashi Shimizu\u2019s \u201cJu-on: The Grudge\u201d franchise is what\u2019s referred to as an \u201cinterquel.\u201d Director\/writer

Pesce\u2019s script attempts to bridge events that occurred on both sides of the Pacific with a story that takes place in-between what happened in the other films. This idea quickly unravels, and Pesce, whose 2016 horror movie \u201cThe Eyes of My Mother\u201d garnered praise, can\u2019t seem to crack the \u201cJu-on\u201d code.

Perhaps, the problem is that the mythology\u2019s effectiveness is lost in translation. And to be fair, Shimizu\u2019s original story-line was never interested incoherence.

The J-Horror (or \u201cJapanese Horror\u201d) phenomenon took flight in America in the early 2000s. The best of the adaptations remains Gore Verbinski\u2019s 2002 remake of 1998\u2019s \u201cRingu.\u201d That film, entitled \u201cThe Ring,\u201d enjoyed box office and some critical success as Verbinski and his screenwriter Ehren Kruger (one of the team of scribes on the upcoming \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d) found a way to capitalize on elements of the novel by K\u00f4ji Suzuki.

The success of \u201cThe Ring\u201d spawned a sequel in 2005 and another abysmal third film in 2017. But in its 2002 wake, smelling money, Hollywood produced \u201cThe Grudge\u201d and \u201cDark Water\u201d in 2005. Two more \u201cGrudge\u201d films followed in the States with ever-diminishing returns (the last of which was a direct-to-video release in 2009).
