Below are a number of production photos from CAPTAIN AMERICA: The First Avenger. The movie, staring Chris Evans, is directed by Joe Johnston (JUMANJI, THE WOLFMAN). Set for a release on July 22, 2011, CAPTAIN AMERICA is an adaptation of the long running Marvel comic. The story in the movie reportedly covers Cap’s origin as his alter ego Steve Rogers goes from sickly to super after volunteering to take an experimental serum.
The Captain America character is unabashedly patriotic exposing American ideals (even typifying what has been often debated as “American Exceptional-ism”). One wonders how this will be handled by Hollywood seeking to attract not only a large US domestic audience but an equally sizable international one as well. Remember how the last Superman reboot was altered to play more broadly. Let’s hope that the spirit of the character is retained and like the comic that continued well after the 9/11 tragedy adapted to the changing times without betraying Cap’s core belief’s.
