The movie is called “Rubber” and darned if it doesn’t look wild. I’m sure that I’m way behind on this one, but from the long trailer that’s running on the Apple Trailer site and from other clips I watched on YouTube, it appears that the movie centers on a small desert town terrorized by a mysterious tire. Yes, that’s right, a tire with a mind of its own.
Set to roll out on VOD next month, the movie is from musician turned filmmaker Quentin Dupiex aka Mr. Oizo. His former films which I’m sad to report I’ve not seen include something called “Steak” and another entitled “Nonfilm.” One casting choice in “Rubber” that 80’s action film fans may recognize is Wings “Vice Squad” Hauser who plays the role of Man in wheelchair.
Watching the trailer for “Rubber” I was reminded of a crazy film from the 70s called “The Car.” I’ve included the trailer for “Rubber” and the trailer for “The Car” below. Note that there are a number of clips and trailers for “Rubber” all over YouTube, so, check them all out.
Movies like “Rubber” and “The Car” are both great fun and potentially insightful satire. A few years ago filmmaker Alex Orr while just a college student at Georgia State University made a bit of great schlock with a film called “Blood Car.” That movie colorfully mocked all sorts of sacred cows.
The success of Orr’s film was in its limited budget, which required innovation. It seems when too many resources are thrown at shamelessly irreverent material we end up getting something like Quentin Tarantino’s “Deathproof.” Schlocky satirical filmmaking is best done the Corman way–cheap and fast.
