Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson star in this satirical comedy.
Oh Lord, this looks like great satirical fun! After watching the trailer for “BlacKkKlansman” on a loop yesterday, in my mailbox arrived the download of the red band trailer for Boots Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You.”
This trippy flick takes the voice technique used in the Allstate commercials and turns it into an entertaining appearing bit of social commentary. You know the Allstate commercials where folks magically have their voices transformed into Dennis Haysbert’s deep regal sounding dulcet tones? Well in Riley’s movie, “Atlanta’s” Lakeith Stanfield plays a down on his luck guy named Cassius Green, who goes to work at a telemarketing firm.
After struggling to find his proper voice, he’s given some sage advice by experienced co-worker Langston (Danny Glover). This leads Cassius to adopt his “white” voice (dubbed by David Cross). And in no time, he’s a leading salesman at the company. But trouble appears on the horizon as he comes into the orbit of the crazy Steve Lift (Armie Hammer). Drug and sex fueled excitement are then in the offing.
This is what I gleaned from the trailer. And to sweeten the deal “Thor: Ragnarok’s” Tessa Thompson plays Cassius’ girlfriend.
The red band trailer isn’t much different than the previous trailer I watched for this one, but we do get the full language (Terry Crews has a notable exclamation).
Look for “Sorry to Bother You” in theaters on July 6.
